Scoop: Uniqlo sets opening date for permanent store at Ala Moana Center

Uniqlo, the trendy Japanese clothing retailer that recently opened its first Hawaii location at Ala Moana Center as a temporary, pop-up store, has set an opening date for its a permanent shop at the state’s largest shopping center, and is keeping its temporary store and making that one a permanent store. Store employees told Shimogawa Scoops that the new, permanent store, which will be located adjacent to Zara, is scheduled to open on September 28. As expected, the pop-up Uniqlo has exceeded expectations and thus has led to the popular brands permanent roots being planted in the Islands. Uniqlo’s pop-up store also is staying open on a permanent basis.

Honolulu Club office building not actively being marketed for sale anymore

The Honolulu Club mixed-use office building along Ward Avenue that’s home to the popular upscale health club was actively being marketed for sale by its owners, Shimogawa Scoops has learned. However, in public filings released Friday by California real estate investment trust Douglas Emmett Inc., which owns a two-thirds interest in the 80,000-square-foot building, said that during the second quarter it “ceased marketing the assets for sale.” Douglas Emmett, which owns other Hawaii office buildings including Bishop Square and Harbor Court in Downtown Honolulu, said that, during the first quarter, it actively marketed the Honolulu Club building for sale. No other details were revealed regarding the building, which is also owned by Hawaii developer Dick Gushman.

Tin Hut BBQ secures office space in Honolulu as it prepares for major expansion

Tin Hut BBQ, a mainland-style barbecue food truck that’s one of the most popular food trucks in Hawaii, has recently struck a deal to lease office space in Honolulu with its eyes squarely on attaining its first brick-and-mortar space, the owner tells Shimogawa Scoops. Founded by military veteran Frank Diaz, Tin Hut BBQ was voted as the top food truck in Hawaii in 2017 by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The food truck, which serves Carolina-style pulled pork, Texas brisket, KC Ribs and southern-style chicken, is leasing an office space at 900 Nimitz Highway that’s also home to La Tour CafĂ©, Party City, 7-Eleven, Manaola, Primerica, Elite Discount Furniture, 900 LLC, 5.11 Tactical and Bangkok Chef. The highly-visible building was once the home to Weyerhaeuser’s packaging plant. The new office serves as the headquarters of Tin Hut BBQ’s operations.
